A New Era For The Westside Writers Schmooze Starts Tomorrow!

I've been struggling to figure out how to best sum up the last two and a half years of co-captaining the schmooze with Rita Crayon Huang.

But Rita, as always, comes to the rescue - with her permission, I'm re-posting this from her blog. Thanks, Rita!

Check it out! SCBWI's International Summer Conference Registration starts tomorrow (April 15th, at 10 AM Pacific Time), and they're using my photos from last year's conference on the Registration page, as a teaser! They're embedded as a slideshow!

I didn't know you could embed Flickr slideshows. I want to do that, too. But I want to do it for the SCBWI Westside Schmooze. Last night was Lee Wind's and my last schmooze as its Coordinators. It's been a wonderful run of 2 1/2 years, from which we've both learned so much. We often joked that we weren't (were not) trying to teach a UCLA Extension Course on children's book writing through this Schmooze. But honestly, leading the Schmooze was like taking such a course. An intensive one.

Here are some photos I took during that time.

If you can't see the slideshow because you're viewing this somewhere other than my LiveJournal, click here. We're doing writing exercises, critiquing manuscripts, discussing such serious topics as Voice, Beginnings and Endings, and Multiculturalism, listening to special guest speakers, and more!

Enjoy!

P.S.
All hail the Westside Schmooze's new Coordinators, Karol Ruth Silverstein and Charlie Cohen!! Keep following the Westside Schmooze blog, everyone, for all of our continued adventures!

As I once said in Lee's and my "Volunteers in the Spotlight" piece in Kite Tales, I kept a deliberately low profile when I first started attending this Schmooze, because I didn't want to volunteer. (Thanks a lot, Sara and Greg, for asking me, anyway.) But the learning has been humbling and stupendous. (Thanks a lot, Sara and Greg, for asking me, anyway!) I am singing a changed tune. Otherwise I couldn't have roped in Karol and Charlie with such a clean conscience. Super super superstars!!

((kind of ominous, isn't it? Muahahahahaha!))

And please show up in droves for Karol and Charlie's first schmooze on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at the Fairview Branch Library Community Room, 2101 Ocean Park Boulevard, Santa Monica, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Our meetings are in association with the Fairview Branch Santa Monica Library.

Misfits, Mutts and Bastards - Alternate Formats & Forms
Graphic novels, illustrated novels, novels in verse, comic books, hybrids… from Hugo Cabret to the Wimpy Kid, there's more than one way to skin a story. At the May Schmooze we'll take a look outside the box and explore these oddball formats. Find out how they tick, what they look like (why you can't just slap a new cover page on an old screenplay and call it a graphic novel), and where you can sell 'em! PLUS: The baton has been passed: It's Charlie and Karol's first Schmooze as coordinators. Come and watch us stammer and sweat!

Nahh, they're gonna be great!

Write On!

Namaste,
Lee & Rita

  1. I wish I could have been there for your last time as coordinators. You two have done amazing work. I love the schmooze, but I have two separate improv classes which changed their meeting times to Wednesday night. As it is, I am attend each of them every other week. This will be over in July and I'll be back to play.
I hope to see you there. Susan
